Dr. Lane, Dr. Sale, and Ms. Webb shared information about the VA Department of Education's actions to support local school districts as we all deal with the school's being closed at least through the end of the academic year. State Superintendent James Lane has been vocal about the need for patience as they help us navigate uncharted territory. The buildings are closed but learning continues. They shared that more guidance and plans will be released in the coming days but here is what has been released so far:
- COVID-19: A Parent Guide for School-Aged Children
- COVID-19 and Virginia Public Schools
- COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions
Since the call, Newport News Public Schools has released more information for the district's plan to continue education. Here's a Daily Press article on the work NNPS is doing to make sure students have what they need for distance learning. As far as SOLs, mandates are at the state and federal level. The state level can cancel/postpone the state ones, but a waiver must be filed to get the federal ones cancelled/postponed. State Superintendent Lane has announced they will file for a federal waiver and the US Secretary of Education has said publicly that she will approve any waivers. So this is in process and more information can be found at the VDOE website.
