DELEGATE MARCIA “CIA” PRICE NAMED CHAIRWOMAN OF HOUSE PRIVILEGES AND ELECTIONS COMMITTEE
RICHMOND, VA – Today, Speaker-designee Don Scott announced he has selected Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price to chair the House Privileges and Elections Committee in the 2024 General Assembly Session. Delegate Price will be the first Black woman to chair the committee. In 2021, Price carried HB 1890, the Voting Rights Act of Virginia, which expanded and protected voting rights for people across the Commonwealth.
The Privileges and Committee is the longest continuously running committee in the nation’s oldest Legislature.
Speaker-designee Don Scott, “Delegate Price has had an immeasurable impact on voting rights in the Commonwealth of Virginia and I cannot think of anyone better suited to chair the Privileges and Elections committee. Her past work has only been a preview of what is to come from the Committee and I cannot wait to see what they do to continue to protect the enfranchisement of every eligible Virginian.”
“I am humbled by the faith that Speaker-designee Scott has now placed in me to lead this committee as we reaffirm our commitment to protecting our democracy,” said Delegate Cia Price. “All my life, I have been passionate about protecting our democracy and was proud to lead the fight for the Voting Rights Act of Virginia. The gravity of this moment is not lost on me and I carry it with me into the work to stand firm in the face of those who seek to undermine our voting rights and sabotage our elections. Virginia has become a bastion of democracy in the South, and no amount of disinformation or intimidation will stop the committee’s work from protecting voting rights.”
Price’s position as House Privileges and Elections Committee Chair will become effective upon Scott's election as Speaker by the House of Delegates, after the members take their oaths of office on the first day of Session, January 10, 2024.
